Who says Nissyros, says volcano.
This small island to the south of Kos has been created by
several volcanic eruptions starting 160.000 years ago.
The centre of Nissyros is dominated by a huge volcanic valley
( caldera ).
Its diameter is some 4 km, what makes it the biggest caldera
of Europe.
Fascinating is the enormous crater in the valley in which
you can descend to admire the beautiful yellow sulphur crystals,
created by the sulphurous steam, escaping from holes in the
bottom.
Visiting the volcano is an unforgettable experience.
But that is only one side of the island. The other side of
Nissyros is the unspoilt typical Greek atmosphere still to
be found here.
After the visit of the volcano you will take a walk through
the narrow picturesque streets of Mandraki, the main village
of the island.
Passing by the small central square " of the old people
" with its shady big trees you arrive at the 120 steps
leading to the monastery of the " Holy Virgin of the
Cave ".
For the locals the presence of the Holy Virgin is a reality
and She helped them out a lot of times.
